Just When You Thought...

When you sail into Bordeaux, you enter the river Gargonne from the Atlantic and cruise south to Bordeaux.

And to get out you have to sail back to the north and around to the west.  There's a tiny port called Le Verdon that would (in a perfect world) like to be a suburb of Bordeaux, but is, in fact, a one-horse town that serves simply as a jumping off point for cruise ships picking up travelers who have gone wine tasting on their own.

Not far from Le Verdon is a town called Soulac Sur Mer - basically a beach town with loads of restaurants, bars, and shops which I'm certain are packed during the summer.  We took a shuttle from the one-horse to the vacant beach town while waiting for the wine hounds to return to the ship and really had a nice day of it.

We enjoyed delicious mussels and some wine at a cafe.

This will be packed in a few months

Cute beach houses

A beautiful ancient church that was sunken (like Atlantis, then buried, then restored).  The Notre Dame de Fin de les Terres.

Lovely inside

including a statue of JPII

We came back to the ship and told the news: the weather at Saint Jean de Luz (where we had planned an excursion to medieval Bayonne) was too bad for us to sail into.  That's the third port cancelled on this trip.  Sigh.

While disappointed that we would not get to our last port in France, we're kind of excited to be spending two days in Bilbao Spain!  Time to do a little research to see what we can do.  Bilbao is known for its impressive Guggenheim Museum - and maybe now we'll have the time to check it out.

You just never know what's going to happen on a cruise (at least weather-wise), so we'll go with the flow and enjoy Spain for an extra day!
