Bilbao - Day 2

We hit many of Bilbao's highlights yesterday, so we set out today to relax and enjoy the city.

After our shuttle dropped us downtown, we headed back into the old city to Plaza Nueva - a local favorite full of restaurants, cafes, and shops.

On the way, we noticed a beautiful building - we're not sure of its occupants, but a statue of John Adams (yes, our John Adams) graced the front plaza.

 Kind of impressive!

We crossed the bridge into the old town and strolled down one of the narrow streets to find this old Gothic church.  So pretty.

Once we arrived in Plaza Nueva, we got right down to business - breakfast.

Yeah, that's chocolate spilling out from that puffy little pastry.

We spent almost an hour enjoying the food, the coffee, and the view - people watching is extraordinary!  We left the cafe and worked our way toward a brew pub - Bizarre Bilbao - that was closed yesterday - hoping it was open today.

About halfway there, we came upon a lovely park and took a seat to enjoy what was turning into a glorious day.

We left the park and found that the brew pub was in fact open - YAY!  We started in on the tap list and then had a fabulous lunch.

Well, Joe had finished his burrito by the time I got this taken...I just wasn't fast enough!  The server at Bizarre was soooo nice.  She let us try tastes of whatever we wanted - lots of local brews.  She brought us an extra appetizer, basically nachos with a delicious salsa and queso.  She didn't speak much English, but we managed just fine.

We left the pub and began our walk back to the shuttle drop off.  We were a little early, so we stopped at another park for a bit.

Bilbao is a lovely city with fantastic old buildings, stunning modern architecture, lively plazas, great food, and delightful friendly people.  We had a wonderful day enjoying it.  Can't wait to come back!

Tonight we're heading to La Coruna on fairly rough seas...ugh.
